Julie Vokey is mom to a signing toddler and will be moving to Newmarket in March of 2006. Julie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications and currently does outreach work with a non-profit organization serving the deaf, deafened, and hard-of-hearing individuals. Julie is fluent in American Sign Language and is actively involved in the Deaf community. Volunteering with Deaf organizations years ago gave her the opportunity to learn a lot about the unique culture.

Julie remarks, "I fell in love with ASL the moment I started learning it (at the Canadian Hearing Society) several years ago. I have been using ASL myself with my son and it has, on several occasions, helped me better understand what he wants. Not only does it ease frustration for a lot of people, it is also so much fun -- just wait 'til your baby playfully signs 'more' to get tickled again! I intend to continue communicating with him in ASL, along with other languages, even when he can speak. As a WeeHands instructor, I hope to share my own experiences with other families. Babies are very smart - they can learn several languages at the same time especially from 0-4 years."
