Lisa Billershaw is mommy to 22 month old Jayden, who now has 60 signs! Lisa is thrilled to be teaching what she loves in her community. "My experience using sign language in my own family has been one of the most rewarding bonding experiences I've ever had. Our son is very confident, especially when he is able to "talk" about his day, what is in his environment.. whether it is to tell us he's seen a "dog" outside or he saw a bag of "grapes" in someone's cart at the grocery store"
"Of all my past work experiences, nothing was as rewarding as working with children. Helping to guide and empower them, teaching them how to connect with the world around them, is not only fascinating but has wonderful ramifications to the world in which they live. One of the greatest building blocks of a child's future success depends upon their self-esteem. When a child receives an immediate responses to their wants, needs and feelings as a result of something they have said or signed they know they have made a connection with someone else, they have been heard and understood. There are few rewards greater for a child than making that loving and understanding connection. This is one of the many gifts sign language has brought to my family."
Lisa has worked with children for over 20 years in a variety of settings. As a preschool teacher, Lisa has taught in both mainstream as well as speech and language impaired classrooms. Lisa began studying American Sign Language in high school and currently, holds a Bachelors degree in "Audiology & Speech Language Pathology" from Michigan State University and had studied Spanish for 8 years. Lisa's past work as a singer and storyteller bring an enormous amount of fun and excitement to her classes!
