Mabel Contreras-Wong
is a proud mom to two signing boys Phoenix,
4 years and Talon, 2 year. She has a Diploma in Early
Childhood Education from Seneca College and continues to
learn American Sign Language (ASL) with the Canadian
Hearing Society. In 2009, Mabel completed ASL 103 at with
the Canadian Hearing Society in Toronto.
Mabel
is familiar with the benefits of using American Sign
Language because of her experience as an Early Childhood
Educator and an Educational Assistant for those with
special needs. Mabel has been an educational assistant
with the Toronto District School Board for 10-years and is
also a part-time student at Ryerson University in the
Disability Studies Program.

Along with her husband and son, Mabel was also a
student in a WeeHands class. "I believe it is
important for families to learn to communicate
with their babies in order to decrease future
frustrations and negative behaviours. My hope is
also to bridge the gap between the Deaf and
hearing culture. It's exciting thinking that this
social change could possibly start with our
children" |
