Stephanie Harper
is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario and has
been formally studying American Sign Language in the
spring of 2006. After studying filmmaking (and co-directing an educational video with an
all-deaf crew), Stephanie was finally able to merge her two passions: psychology and
art. She completed a two-year graduate program in Art Therapy at the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute in 1998.
During her training, and for five years after graduation, Stephanie worked primarily with children, and often with families, helping
them work through challenging behavioural and emotional issues. As Art and Play Therapist for the Musqueam
Indian Band, Stephanie was always awestruck by the ability of even the most troubled
children to grow, develop and express themselves given a safe and nurturing
environment.

Shortly after my son was born in 2003, my mother sent me
a book on baby sign language I had seen a
TV program about the subject, and was thrilled
to try it with Oliver. Oliver used his signs to
communicate from 7 to 24 months of age.
His ability to converse through
signs definitely lowered the frustration level
for everyone in our family. I was always
amazed at how much information he could convey
through signing, we had some great
conversations before he could say any words! |
